Ready To Work San Joaquin

Ready to Work Current News

Ready to Work welcomes first clients!

On July 18, Ready to Work welcomed its first cohort of clients to its shelter facility.

It was a big day for our program. Even though it seems like we’ve been waiting of this day forever, RTW went from nothing more than an idea to sheltering clients in 18 months. The incredibly quick timetable was only possible because of the support of our Founding Sponsors, the backing of the Community Corrections Partnership, votes from the San Joaquin County Board of Supervisors, the vision of Sheriff Steve Moore, and the tireless dedication of our staff, especially Program Director Deborah Johnson.

And now, our focus is where it should be: on our clients.

On July 18, case managers and facility monitors showed clients to their bunks, went over the rules, and distributed personal items to help them settle in. They received household chore assignments, and were given information about what to expect — that they should be ready to work hard, but that the rewards will be pay, dignity, and the ability to take charge of their own lives.

In the coming days, clients will work with case managers to set their own self-sufficiency plans. These will help clients identify the types of support services they need and plot their way from program enrollment to a successful program exit, employed and on their way to permanent housing.

We’ve taken one big step, and so have our clients. We’re looking forward to the next one, and the one after that.
