If you thought you saw Ready to Work clients on the side of the highway, you weren’t mistaken. Our clients are working to clean up our community thanks to a public-private partnership with Caltrans and the City of Stockton.
A three-year, three-party agreement between Ready to Work, Caltrans, and the city was put into action Tuesday, Oct. 23. Five Ready to Work clients went to work for six hours clearing litter and refuse from state property in Stockton. It’s a pattern that will repeat three days a week, 31 weeks a year, through 2021.
These Work Crews will provide our clients income while they stay in our program, enabling them to save money toward their transportation and permanent housing. Combined with Ready to Work’s support services, this program is a critical step in their path toward self-sufficiency.
The partnership is unique to the area, and the product of outside-the-box thinking from Caltrans District 10. Project manager John Oliva wanted a way to clean local highways while also helping some of the most needy people in the community. Ready to Work was a natural partner, and together we worked with Stockton Public Works to bring this program to life.
